Cabinet dimensions are easy to misread and expensive to miscut. Estimators talk in overall box sizes. The floor cuts finished panel sizes after joinery. Installers care about clear openings and filler allowances. If those three languages are not mapped on the drawing and cut list, you get short gables and drawers that will not clear the frame.

Overall Box Size vs Finished Panel Size

Overall box size is what the designer places on the plan. Finished panel size is what the saw cuts. The difference is joinery: dados, rabbets, butt joints, back inset, and edge banding thickness (if you cut oversized then trim).

Example: a frameless base 24 in wide x 24 in deep x 34.5 in high does not mean every panel is those numbers. Left and right gables are typically height x depth. The bottom is roughly (width minus joinery) x (depth minus joinery). Document your joint system so every estimator uses the same subtraction rules.

Clear Opening and Appliance Fits

Clear opening is the usable width and height inside the face frame or inside the frameless reveal. Dishwashers, sinks, and microwave units care about clear opening and overall rough opening, not the gable blank size.

Face-frame stiles reduce clear width. Frameless full-overlay doors reduce visual reveal but keep interior width close to the box ID. Put appliance manufacturer min/max clearances on the job ticket before you finalize box widths.

  • Dishwasher: confirm 24 in nominal vs actual unit width and adjacent filler plan
  • Range: check freestanding vs slide-in counter height interaction
  • Fridge panels: overall height and depth often exceed standard wall depth
  • Sink base: width must clear bowl and faucet geometry, not only door style

Toe Kick Inside the Height Number

Confusion is common: is 34.5 in the full gable height including the kick recess, or the height above a separate platform? Most NA shops cut base gables to 34.5 in and recess the bottom front for a 3 in kick, or build a separate toe platform and set the box on top.

Whichever method you use, the finished counter height target is typically about 36 in (914 mm) including countertop thickness. State the method on the cut list notes so gable height is not double-counted.

Inches vs Millimeters in One Shop

North American residential work still quotes many modules in inches. Frameless shops on the 32 mm system often draft in millimeters for boring accuracy. Mixing units on one cut list is a classic error source.

Pick a unit per job file. If you import from a metric design package into an inch-based nest, convert once at import and lock it. Cutlistor accepts the numeric sizes you enter; it will not catch a 610 vs 24 mix-up for you.

Tolerances Shops Actually Work To

Sheet goods thickness varies. A nominal 3/4 in panel may measure 0.72 to 0.75 in. Calibrate dado widths to actual thickness, not the label. Length and width tolerances on cut panels are often within 0.5 mm to 1 mm for CNC shops; panel saw shops should still aim tight enough that doors reveal evenly across a run.

Field walls are worse. Leave filler strategy in the dimension plan so the modular boxes stay on standard widths while scribes absorb the mess.

Putting Dimensions on the Cut List

Every cut list row should carry finished cut size in the shop's unit, plus a note when a size is rough for scribe. Link part labels to elevation IDs so a 30 in wall box is not confused with a 30 in base.

After dimensions are locked, nest with kerf. Overall room math does not replace sheet count math.

Does 24 in deep include the door?

Usually no. Standard 24 in refers to the carcase depth. Doors add thickness in front; countertops often overhang the doors. Confirm whether appliance specs reference carcase depth or depth including doors.

Why are widths in 3 in increments?

Traditional NA stock cabinetry used 3 in modules for manufacturing efficiency. Custom shops can cut any width, but staying on a module grid simplifies drawer box stock and door sizing. Fillers handle the remainder to the wall.

Do metric sheets change cabinet dimensions?

European 2800 x 2070 mm boards change nesting yield, not the installed kitchen standards you promised the client. Recalculate nests when stock format changes; keep finished box sizes per the design.
