What drives plywood price

Sticker price is the starting point. Two sheets with the same species name can differ by tens of dollars if one is void-free multi-ply and the other is a patched utility core with a thin face. Always ask what is under the veneer.

  • Face species and grade (A face vs shop grade)
  • Core quality (voids, veneer vs combination core)
  • Thickness and sheet size (5×5 vs 4×8)
  • Glue type (interior vs exterior / marine)
  • Region and freight from the mill
  • Market cycles overlapping softwood lumber — related but not identical

Buying tips that save money

  • Split grades: show faces on better plywood, hidden parts on cheaper sheets.
  • Measure thickness — dados cut for “3/4” may need adjustment.
  • Compare price per square foot across 4×8 and 5×5 formats.
  • Ask about shop-grade or secondary bins for painted work.
  • Bundle delivery with other materials to cut freight per sheet.

Suppose a small kitchen needs eight sheets of 3/4 in cabinet birch at about $85 each in your market — $680 in boxes alone before backs, doors, and hardware.
