MDF vs Particle Board: Which Sheet for Cabinets & Furniture?

Introduction
MDF and particle board (chipboard) are both engineered panels made from wood particles and resin, but they are not interchangeable. One machines cleanly for paint-grade doors; the other often shows up as the core under melamine for budget carcasses. Knowing the difference saves remakes and bad hardware installs.

Structure and strength
MDF is refined wood fiber pressed into a homogeneous panel. Density is high and consistent, so it stays flat and machines without tear-out. Particle board uses larger chips; density is often higher near the faces and lower in the core, which is why edges crumble and screws strip if you over-drive them.

Cutting, edges, and hardware
MDF dust is fine — use extraction and a respirator. Particle board chips more coarsely but still dusty. Both dull blades faster than softwood; keep carbide sharp. A dull blade burns MDF edges and chips melamine faces — change blades sooner than you would for pine.
Edge banding is mandatory for melamine particle board show edges. Pre-glue or hot-air banding both work; trim flush carefully so you do not scallop the laminate. MDF can be painted on the edge or banded. For paint-grade doors, seal MDF edges with primer or glue size before topcoats so they do not drink finish unevenly.
For hardware, use the right screws: confirmat screws, hinge screws with proper pilots, and avoid driving deep into raw edges without inserts. European hinges need solid screw purchase — strip a particle-board hole once and you are into inserts or relocation.
Kerf still matters. Enter your measured blade kerf in the optimizer so melamine parts do not come up short after banding allowances are applied. If you cut oversized and trim after banding, document that rule in the cut list so the nest and the saw agree.
