Strength, stiffness, and screw holding
For cabinet boxes, carcass shelves, and anything that spans, plywood usually wins on stiffness. The cross-plies resist bending better than MDF of the same thickness. A 3/4 in (18–19 mm) plywood shelf will deflect less than the same size MDF shelf under books or dishes.
Screw holding is more nuanced. Plywood holds screws well in the face and reasonably in the edge if you use the right length and avoid soft voids. MDF holds face screws fine for hinges and hardware when you use pilots, but edge screws strip easily — prefer confirmat screws, biscuits plus glue, or hardware designed for MDF.
If you need drawers that take abuse or cabinets that get moved often, plywood carcasses are the safer default. MDF shines when the panel is painted, stays dry, and is supported well.
Edges, finish, and moisture
MDF edges machine cleanly. Round-overs, shaker profiles, and paint-grade doors look factory-smooth with primer and topcoat. Plywood edges show the ply lines — fine for shop furniture, but for painted face frames or doors you usually edge-band or apply solid wood lips.
Moisture is the deal-breaker for many shops. Standard MDF swells permanently if it takes a wetting. Keep it in dry interiors, seal all faces and edges, and avoid sinks and laundry rooms unless you use moisture-resistant MDF (MR-MDF) and still seal carefully. Plywood grades range from interior hardwood to exterior and marine — match the grade to the site.
Weight matters on wall cabinets and tall units. MDF is denser; a full kitchen in MDF doors plus plywood boxes is common because doors stay flat and paint well while boxes stay lighter and stronger.

Cutting and nesting: plywood vs MDF
Both materials nest as 2D rectangles on sheet stock. The differences show up in blade choice, dust collection, and whether grain direction is locked.
- Plywood: use a sharp, high-tooth-count blade or climb-cut strategy to reduce face tear-out; lock grain on face-sensitive parts (doors, visible sides).
- MDF: cuts clean but makes fine dust — good extraction is non-negotiable; no true grain, so parts can rotate freely for higher yield unless a laminate face has a pattern.
