Hardwood and softwood are botanical categories, not automatic quality grades. Oak, maple, and walnut are hardwoods; pine, fir, and cedar are softwoods — yet some softwoods are harder than some hardwoods, and both show up in good furniture when used honestly.

Strength, wear, and workability

For tabletops, chair parts, and anything that takes impact, denser hardwoods usually win. Softwoods dent and show wear faster but plane and nail easily — fine for painted face frames, rustic pieces, and shop furniture.

Movement still matters more than the hardwood label. Quartersawn oak and carefully dried softwood can both be stable; poorly dried anything will cup. Match species to finish and climate, not just to a marketing word.

Machining differs too. Hardwoods want sharp cutters and slower feeds; softwoods forgive duller knives but tear out around knots. Glue-ups on oily or resinous softwoods may need wiped surfaces. None of that shows up on a cut list — but it shows up when you price shop hours.

  • Hardwood: better for exposed solid tops, legs, and high-wear edges

Dimensional softwood framing lumber and select pine are usually cheaper per board foot than furniture hardwoods. Mixed builds: lumber + sheet goods

Most furniture is a hybrid. Typical patterns:

  • Hardwood face frames and doors over plywood boxes
  • Softwood painted frames with plywood panels
  • Solid hardwood tops on plywood torsion boxes
  • Baltic birch drawers with hardwood fronts

Cut lists: linear for lumber, sheet for panels

  • Buy straight, dry stock; sight for bow and twist before you cut.
  • Mill oversize, then cut to final length after flatten/thickness — update the cut list if sizes change.
