Woodworking Measurements: Dimensions, Tolerances & Cut List Accuracy

Introduction

Cut lists fail when the numbers on the page are not the numbers at the saw. Nominal lumber is not actual size. Plywood stamped 3/4 in is often 18 mm or 23/32 in. Reveals, scribes, and edge banding change finished openings. If the list ignores those gaps, the nest is precise and the cabinet still does not fit.

This guide covers the measurement habits that keep woodworking cut lists honest: nominal vs actual, sheet thickness variance, when to cut oversized, and which tolerances actually matter before you optimize.

Sheet Goods: Stamped Thickness vs Measured

North American hardwood plywood often measures 23/32 in (about 18.2 mm) when sold as 3/4 in. Baltic birch and European poplar plywood are commonly true metric (12, 15, 18 mm). Melamine and MDF vary by brand. A 0.5 mm thickness miss stacks across dados and shelf pins.

Caliper a sheet from the delivery before you lock groove depths and cut-list thicknesses. Nesting tools care about length and width for yield; joinery cares about actual thickness.

Reveals, Scribes, and Fit Allowances

Finished openings are rarely raw wall-to-wall numbers. Inset doors need even reveals (often 2–3 mm / 1/16–1/8 in). Overlay doors need hinge geometry. Scribe strips need extra material on the wall edge. Toe kicks and countertop overhangs change carcase heights.

Write allowances into the cut list as finished part sizes, not as a sticky note on the drawing. If the designer changes reveal from 2 mm to 3 mm, every door and drawer front on that elevation changes.

  • Inset door: opening minus 2x reveal on width and height
  • Overlay door: full carcase face plus intended overlay per side
  • Scribe panel: finished show width + scribe extra (often 10–20 mm)
  • Shelf length: clear opening minus side clearance for pins or clips

Tolerances That Matter for Cut Lists

Not every dimension needs machining-shop precision. Focus tolerance where parts meet: door reveals, drawer gaps, shelf lengths inside a carcase, and face-frame shoulders. Panel backs that sit in a rabbet can tolerate more.

For nesting, length/width accuracy of about 0.5 mm (0.02 in) is usually enough on woodworking sheet goods. Kerf error of 0.5 mm across twenty cuts is worse than a single part being 0.5 mm long.

  • Critical fit: doors, drawers, face frames — hold tight, measure twice
  • Semi-critical: shelves, dividers — consistent within a box
  • Non-critical: hidden cleats, backs in grooves — prioritize yield
  • Always: same tape, same units, same revision across list and diagram

Units, Imports, and Keeping Numbers Honest

Pick mm or inches for the job and stay there. Converting mid-list invites rounding errors that show up as 718.999 mm panels. When importing CSV/XLSX into Cutlistor, match column units to the project units. AI PDF/image import (paid quotas) is a bootstrap — verify critical sizes with a tape before nesting for purchase.

For CAD, export or derive parts from SketchUp, Rhino, or glTF/GLB/Collada (model import on paid plans) so the cut list inherits model dimensions instead of retyped guesses.

Pre-Optimize Measurement Checklist

Run this before you trust a sheet or stick count for a material order.

  • Caliper sheet thickness from the delivery or a known brand chart
  • Confirm lumber actual size for the batch on the rack
  • Apply reveals and scribes to finished part sizes
  • Mark rough vs finished rows
  • Set kerf to a measured blade or bit width
  • Lock units and revision on the list header
